ZUMA Press has significantly increased its offering of sports photos in the past month by signing distribution deals with The Sporting News, Icon Sports Media and US Presswire.

The agency's current database of 80,000 sports images will now be supplemented by a historical archival of sports photos as well as a wide array of contemporary action and sports portraiture from baseball, basketball, football, hockey and NASCAR.

"I think there's plenty of room for a strong third player [in sports]," says ZUMA founder Scott McKiernan, who estimates that AP and Getty account for more than 90 percent of the domestic sports market. "We want to have a really premium sports platform, and I think we've done that."

Sporting News graphics director Fred Barnes says ZUMA was a good fit because of its reach in both national and international markets. "We're fortunate to have some of the best sports photographers in the country and ZUMA will give readers outside The Sporting News a chance to see their images," Barnes says.

The Sporting News' archive contains 700,000 historical and current images dating back to the early part of the 20th century. Included are Charles M. Conlon's iconic photos of baseball's early stars as well as modern day action shots and portraits of baseball, football, basketball and hockey players by TSN staffers Albert Dixon, Bob Leverone, Jay Drowns and Robert Seale.

US Presswire is a brand new, deadline news service that only officially launched earlier this week. Director and photographer Preston Mack says the aim is to create a quality alternative to the big wire services. "We wanted to align ourselves with someone who was reputable in the industry and who could help us in our early stages," Mack says of the ZUMA partnership. In addition to distributing US Presswire content, ZUMA has also developed the agency's Web site.

US Presswire includes the work of veteran sports photographers Brian Spurlock, Jim Gund, Joe Robbins, Dilip Vishwanat and Todd Rosenberg, among others.

ZUMA, which represents historical and current news and celebrity content as well as sports, also recently signed on to be the exclusive distributor of the British newspapers The Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday and The London Evening Standard.
